How to Make Earring Hooks

As a self-taught jewelry-maker who has owned my own jewelry business for nearly six years, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge. When I began my journey there were very few useful tips online for creating quality handmade jewelry, and now, I’m here to change that. If you’re a fellow jewelry-maker looking for some money and time-saving tips, look no further! I will now be posting weekly tutorial videos on Youtube to help guide your passion for creating beautiful handmade jewelry that’s uniquely yours!

For this week’s tutorial, we focus on how to make your own earring hooks. An earring hook is made of wire that loops to fasten an earring to a pierced ear. Earring hooks are an essential skill as they function as the base to create any earring! The best wire to use is 14k gold or sterling silver as the high-quality metal will help avoid irritation. Also, 20-22 gauge wire is ideal for earring hooks as it is sturdy enough to keep its shape, while small enough to fit through earlobes comfortably.

Once you learn how to make your own earring hooks, the possibilities are endless! Save some money and expand your skillset with just five tools — I think you’ll be surprised how simple it really is!

What you’ll need:

01// 20-22 gauge gold plated or sterling silver round wire

02// Jewelry making bail pliers

03// Round nose pliers

04// Wire cutters

05// ‘Round Your Wire’ tool
